E-Passport Debuts



Travelers are expected to use passports with electronic chip, so called the "E-passport" later this year.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade started issuing electronic passports or e-passports to diplomats and government officials on a trial basis recently.President Lee Myung-bak was the first to receive the e-passport.President Lee used his e-passport for visiting the U.S. April 18-19.

Introducing e-passport will help South Korea join the U.S. visa waiver program, a ministry official said.E-passports have electronic microchip at their back cover.It contains fingerprints and basic personal information of the owner.E-passports for ordinary citizens are scheduled to be issued from August this year.

Horrible things! Several years ago, I had to get a visa to enter America because I didn't have an electronic passport. As my non-electronic one had 5 years left on it I didn't want to pay for a new one.
